The primary sector comprises businesses that extract raw materials from the earth. This is typically via mining or harvesting.

These are the commodity businesses that feed industries with naturally abundant raw material inputs.

Examples

Mining

  • Precious metals (e.g. jewellry business)
  • Mineral deposits (e.g. microchips)
  • Fossil fuels (e.g. petroleum)

Agriculture

  • Livestock farming (e.g. beef, or dairy)
  • Crop harvesting (e.g. wheat, or corn)
  • Evaporation (e.g. sea salt production)
